sereshka: (arse-kicking)
An outfitter with 20+ years of experience kept telling me that it was perfectly alright to ski across Northern Minnesota in late March. How often does one get to dogsled for work?! I found an intriguing small lake in the Boundary Waters area, near the Canadian border, and because it is in the protected wilderness area the only way to get there was by dog sled and skis, across frozen lakes and along the canoe portage trails. The outfitter was adamant that there should be at least 40 cm of ice on all the lakes and plenty of snow, and late March is the time to go. And now it's not. The forecast is calling for 15-20 degrees when it should have been near freezing up there. Damn you, global warming!
